Cheap speakers still must have quality pivoting or swiveling tweeters. A tweeter itself is a loudspeaker that looks like a large dark aluminum or titanium circle that encases a smaller convex circle. Tweeters can also be made of copper, beryllium, magnesium and other alloys.
Perhaps it seems strange that audio equipment would be named for an animal, but this piece of equipment gets its name from the sound that a bird makes – a tweet. The woofer, which makes a deep barking sound, is Cheap Speakers named for the sound of a dog.
Cheap ceiling speakers and cheap wall speakers take advantage of the ability of the tweeter to handle high-pitch frequencies. A typical tweeter does well with high volumes and mid-range volumes. The tweeter is designed to turn electric signals into mechanical movement in the air.
Because of its sophisticated design with a small dome, the tweeter does not do well with low frequencies. The smaller dome has less of a radiating area and cannot seem to manage lower sounds well. Additionally, most tweeters have not been designed to dampen the effect of the mechanical movement that happens when a signal comes into the dome. The dome still vibrates, but in a controllable way and not in any way to produce a quality sound. This inability affects means that low frequency suffers and the ceiling speakers begin to sound like cheap stereo speakers with horribly vibrating sound quality.
In addition to dome tweeters, there is the possibility of purchasing cone tweeters, which are small, stiff relatively inexpensive light cones that do not disperse sound as well as dome tweeters. Manufacturers customarily place these speakers in boom boxes, car stereos or shelf stereos.
The piezo tweeter uses a piezoelectric crystal for generating sound. The crystal responds to electric impulses and turns those impulses into an audible sound. Most piezoelectric tweeters are considered low-end in terms of output and are found mostly in public address systems. These speakers do not compare to higher end dome tweeters.
Ribbon tweeters use plastic film and aluminum diaphragms to hold a coil made of aluminum vapor deposits and suspended in a magnetic field. These tweeters were primarily made to complement ribbon microphones. In terms of performance, the ribbon the tweeters have been known to produce high frequencies but not high outputs. A magnetic gap has been blamed for this deficiency.
The most controversial tweeter on the market is a plasma tweeter. Also called an ion tweeter, it, too, makes use of a diaphragm that is low mass and responds very well to any signal that is input. It does not have a high output and releases ozone gas, which is poisonous and dangerous for the environment. Many of these speakers have been banned in the U.S.
It is important to understand both the nature of what a tweeter is supposed to do and the variety of tweeters currently available to handle that function. Once you understand the market and the intended purpose of tweeters, you will know the significance of these instruments to the performance of even cheap speakers, and you can make a buying decision that gives you the sound you want at an affordable price.
